As we head towards Autumn and the lovely September days when the sun is still shining and the ocean is still warm, we decided to get some inspiration on things to do on the Lizard from three new (ish) books:
15 Short Walks: Falmouth & The Lizard by Phil Turner
This pocket sized book outlines 15 short walks (all under 3 hours) with easy to follow descriptions, parking info and highlights for each route. 5 of the walks are close to Trelowarren including Frenchman’s Creek, Cadgwith & the Devils Frying Pan and Lizard Point & Church Cove. The book comes with lovely imagery and little pop out facts such as ‘The true roots of the name Lizard are unknown, but it could come from the Cornish lezou which translates to ‘headland’.
Secret Gardens of Cornwall: A Private Tour by Tim Hubbard
This beautiful coffee table book is a private tour of twenty lesser-known, but extraordinary Cornish gardens. Three of the gardens are within a

Tim Hubbard
10 minute drive of Trelowarren including Bonython Estate Garden which Tim describes as ‘like stepping into a romantic French impressionist painting.’, Caervallack at St Martin which he labels ‘one of the quirkiest of the county’s gardens’ and Kestle Barton near Manaccan which Tim says ‘turns its back on the past to create something modern, stylish and defiantly different’.
Writer Stephan Neale spent more tan a year walking and camping the path and has written this fantastically detailed book detailing 1,000 secret, famous and surprising adventures to be had along the route. With a chapter dedicated to The Lizard, Neale’s pop out list of ‘must-dos’ include smelling purple heather over a sand beach, exploring a crumbling harbour pier, tasting asparagus foraged at low tide and climbing the mysterious Giant’s rock (amongst others). The book also gives tips on where to swim, drink and eat.
And of course, if you want to stay closer to home, there are plenty of walks and adventures to be had, right here on the estate.
